Providence, R.I. Fights Crime With New World Systems' Public Safety Software

TROY, MI--(Marketwire - October 5, 2009) - Providence, R.I. has achieved dramatic improvements in public safety by connecting police officers and firefighters to mission-critical information. The Providence Police and Fire Departments are taking advantage of an advanced city-wide mesh network and New World Systems' integrated Aegis/MSP® Public Safety Software to improve communication and access to information and allow emergency responders to better serve more than 180,000 city residents.

To meet the complex needs of their large city, Providence replaced an outdated software system with New World Systems' state-of-the-art Aegis/MSP Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), Law Enforcement Records Management, Fire Records Management, Mobile Computing, Field-Based Reporting and Corrections software in 2004.

"New World's software is much better suited to a city of our size than many other vendors' solutions," said Charles Hewitt, CIO for the City of Providence. "Smaller cities and towns do not face the same problems that a big city experiences. New World's software is exceptionally equipped to handle our type of complex and demanding big city urban environment."

New World's completely integrated applications and single database improved efficiency, aided investigations, and eliminated redundant data entry for the Providence Police Department by ensuring all related criminal information was tied together throughout the system.

"An integrated public safety system is a necessity to coordinate and communicate across multiple departments," said Hewitt. "It also ensures data quality and is a huge time saver."

In 2006, to provide enhanced availability, access to information and secure communications for public safety officers outside of the police station, the City completed the successful deployment of a border-to-border wireless broadband network. The network offers police and fire personnel secure access to critical software applications and law enforcement tools from anywhere in the City. The network gives first responders the same access to software applications (including live video camera images, dispatch information and criminal records) in their vehicles that they would have at their desktop computers at the police or fire stations.

Through the network, the City's 600 police officers and 500 firefighters now use New World Systems' software anywhere in the City to quickly respond to emergencies, receive critical safety alert information, easily look up mug shots, get silent dispatches, create and submit reports, view the status and location of other officers and much more. The volume of information easily available to officers in the field and the ability to handle the complex needs of a large city like Providence has made New World's software invaluable to fighting crime and improving officer and citizen safety in the City.

"Providence is a safer place thanks to the enhanced communication and access to information our officers have through New World's software," said Chief of Police Colonel Dean Esserman. "New World's software, combined with neighborhood policing innovations, is having a dramatic impact on reducing the crime rate in our City. The technology is keeping our forces out in the field, mobile and visible, which is an essential part of enforcing the law."

Working closely with New World, the City has leveraged the technology behind the Company's software to enhance their own IT innovations and programs. This close partnership between Providence and New World has allowed the City to achieve what many large cities across the country strive for: a cost effective way to increase public safety presence and responsiveness throughout the community.

"We have found a great partner in New World," said Hewitt. "The Company has not only provided software to meet our needs, but a great team of people to help us implement and adapt the system to our unique requirements. New World's software has successfully become the core technology behind our police, fire and dispatch operations and it will continue to be that way well into the future."
