PRSA New York Delivers Big Applicious News to 2014 Big Apple Awards Finalists

Forty Different Organizations Represented Among This Year's 73 Finalist Campaigns and Single Item Entries

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Apr 15, 2014) - Following a record-setting number of entries, The New York Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA-NY) today announced the finalists for the 2014 Big Apple Awards. As the toughest peer-judged awards in the industry, the Big Apple Awards recognize excellence in public relations in the tri-state area. A complete list of finalists, including small to large agencies, corporations and non-profit organizations, is now available on the PRSA-NY website. Award winners and honorable mentions will be recognized during the Big Apple Awards Gala on May 22, 2014 at the Mandarin Oriental New York.

"This has been a banner year for the Big Apple Awards program," said Linda Krebs, 2014 Big Apple Awards chair & PRSA-NY president-elect, founder & CEO of LKPR, Inc. "We not only took the entry process completely online, saving entrants time and eliminating waste, but we also received 230 entries -- the most in PRSA-NY history. The sheer caliber of the work implemented in 2013 made selecting our finalists an arduous task for this year's judges who enjoyed the collegial debate."

With the help of Big Apple Awards sponsor Edible Arrangements, PRSA-NY surprised all 40 finalist organizations last week with some chocolate-covered good news. The companies each received a box of Chocolate Dipped Apple Wedges to share with their teams notifying them of their finalist status. Finalists were encouraged to take team photos and share their "apple excitement" on social media with the hashtags #BigAppleAwardsFinalist and #EdibleArrangements. 

"People love sharing images on social media, and PR teams are no different," said Betsy Smith, 2014 Big Apple Awards social media chair, founder and CEO of All in Smith. "Hashtagged images of teams proudly holding their edible finalist announcements were shared on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Google+. The Big Apple Awards finalist announcement campaign reached 175,329 users on Twitter alone, with nearly 800,000 timeline deliveries of hashtagged messages. In total, the social media campaign saw 134 tweets from influential agency and client accounts such as @OgilvyPR and @KetchumPR."

Winners and honorable mentions will be announced at the annual Big Apple Awards Gala on Thursday, May 22 at the Mandarin Oriental New York. Overall winners for the "Best Use of Research," "Best Business/Campaign Outcomes" (new for 2014), and "Best of the Best" will also be named at that time. Additionally, the John W. Hill, Philip Dorf and President's Award will be bestowed upon recipients of this year's individual chapter awards honoring industry leadership and significant contributions to the practice of public relations.

Big Apple Award entries were evaluated by teams of senior-level PR practitioners representing a broad range of disciplines and expertise. Judges reviewed and scored the entries using an online judging portal and then met in person for roundtable discussions to ultimately determine the finalists.

PRSA-NY established the Big Apple Awards in 1988 to celebrate excellence in public relations. Widely regarded as one of the industry's most prestigious accolades, the Big Apple Awards honor innovative and strategic PR campaigns and projects.
