PRSA-NY Establishes New Tax-Exempt Scholarship Fund to Benefit New York Metro-Area Students

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - November 27, 2007) - The New York Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA-NY) has announced the creation of a new scholarship fund under the auspices of the PRSA Foundation to benefit Metro-area students. As a 501(c) 3 organization, the PRSA Foundation provides tax-exempt status for monies donated for New York Chapter scholarships. The Chapter's Education Committee will determine the nature and amounts of scholarships each year.

"This is a momentous step that will enable the New York Chapter to build a significant scholarship fund that will benefit deserving students in the New York Metro area," said Barbara M. Burns, PRSA-NY President. "The Chapter has always provided some scholarships each year, but without a tax-exempt advantage it has been impossible to grow a fund for the needs of future scholarships," she added.

The Chapter has given the Philip Dorf Memorial Scholarship, as well as the mentoring award in his name, each year since 1995 to honor Dorf, an outstanding mentor to public relations students and professionals. The scholarship has been generously funded by his son Bob Dorf of Stamford, CT. In 2007, Maria Martinez of the City College of New York received the $1,000 scholarship.

The Chapter itself has provided the funds for the PRSA-NY Recognition Awards for PRSSA Students. The 2007 recipients, one from each locally sponsored PRSSA Chapter, were chosen by the chapter's faculty advisors. This year's recipients are Maria Martinez, City College of New York; Rachel Zabinski, Hofstra University; Elizabeth Lotts, Fashion Institute of Technology; and Jessica Markram, Iona College. Each student received a scholarship of $500.

The aspiration of the PRSA-NY Board is to actively seek funds for scholarships under the new tax-exempt status so that more students can benefit in the future.

For donations by credit card, call Marlene Montes, PRSA Foundation, tel: 212.460.1412. Checks should be made payable to the PRSA Foundation, 33 Maiden Lane, 11th Fl, New York, NY 10038. In both cases indicate that the donation is for the New York Chapter Fund.

PRSA-NY is one of the founding chapters of the PRSA, the world's largest professional organization for public relations practitioners. PRSA-NY was founded in 1948 and is the third largest PRSA local chapter in the United States. The Chapter serves the interests of public relations professionals working in business and industry, counseling firms, government, associations, hospitals, schools, professional services firms and nonprofit organizations. Chapter board and committee members are volunteer public relations professionals who work in the NYC metropolitan area.
