PSEPC: Statement by Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 24, 2006) - Minister of Public Safety, Stockwell Day, issued the following statement in recognition of the work done by Canadian law enforcement officers in a joint RCMP-FBI operation leading to the arrest of persons allegedly associated with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam:

"We are reminded almost daily of the global reach of terrorism and clearly Canada is not immune. Over the last several weeks, the RCMP and the FBI have collaborated on an operation directed at the efforts of individuals, Canadians among them, who allegedly conspired to procure weapons on behalf of the Tamil Tigers for its ongoing war against the Sri Lankan government. Our government considers the Tamil Tigers a terrorist organization and was quick to take action when we added them to the list of terrorist entities in April.

I want to commend those involved in this ongoing operation, specifically, the RCMP national security program and the Toronto Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET), as well as their U.S. law enforcement partners. This is a testament to the excellent cooperation between our two countries to ensure public safety and security.

Our new government is committed to working with all our partners to help ensure the safety of Canadians."
