PSEPC: Statement by the Minister of Public Safety Regarding Malcolm Watson

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 18, 2006) - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, issued this statement following the ruling of the Immigration and Refugee Board in the case of Malcolm Watson.

"On behalf of Canada's New Government, I am very pleased with today's decision of the Immigration and Refugee Board's to issue a removal order against Malcolm Watson. This brings the government one step closer to being in a position to remove Mr. Watson from Canada. Our new government remains unwavering in its pledge to protect Canadians from people who have committed crimes in other countries. Canada will not be a safe haven for sexual predators.

Our new government's resolve to initiate proceedings in this matter should send a strong signal to those who think that they can test the enforcement of our immigration laws. In such matters, the government's tolerance level is zero. I commend the Canada Border Services Agency for its diligent work and salute its ongoing vigilance in protecting our country.
