PSEPC: Working Together to Save a Victim of Sexual Abuse

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 3, 2007) - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, issued the following statement with respect to international and national cooperation to save a young victim from alleged sexual abuse.

The victim sent an email to a children's help line in Australia who immediately relayed the information to the Queensland Police. The United States and Canada then became involved.

"The fact that a child's cry of help was heard in Australia and the child was removed from an abusive situation in Canada could only have been achieved through teamwork. With one ultimate goal in mind - to save this youngster - law enforcement agencies, child protection organizations and the private sector worked hand-in-hand and achieved their goal. This child is now out of danger. The sexual exploitation of any defenceless child is a heinous crime and Canada's new government has made a commitment to fight all crime in whatever manifestation it takes.

I am pleased to see that Bell Aliant (an Internet service provider associated with Bell Canada) acted responsibly and quickly with the police and, as a result, the child's location was found and authorities were able to remove the child from a sexually abusive environment. Combating crime is a battle and no battle can be fought alone. When private sector companies assume their responsibilities, society is one step closer to victory - the rescue of this child proves it.

I'd like to thank everyone involved internationally: the Kid's Help Line and Queensland Police in Australia and the FBI Innocent Images International Taskforce in the United States. Here in Canada, the RCMP's National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre (NCECC) who worked with its international partners and Bell Aliant should also be applauded."
