Psomas Optimizes Efficiency and Saves More Than $1 Million Annually by Deploying Riverbed

Riverbed Steelhead Appliances and Steelhead Mobile Enable Productivity Gains, Greater Collaboration and IT Consolidation for Top Engineering Firm

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - January 29, 2008) - Riverbed Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: RVBD), the technology and market leader in wide-area data services (WDS), today announced that Psomas, a leading consulting engineering firm, has selected and successfully deployed 15 Riverbed Steelhead® appliances, as well as Steelhead Mobile software on the laptops of its mobile and remote workforce. The deployment has enabled Psomas to consolidate its existing IT infrastructure in the midst of rapid company expansion and the opening of new offices -- all while facilitating greater company-wide collaboration. The speed delivered by Riverbed® has helped Psomas to maintain its reputation as a nationally-ranked firm with cutting-edge technical expertise, while saving the company more than $1 million dollars in a year by increasing employee productivity.

Founded in 1946 by George Psomas, Psomas is an award-winning engineering firm specializing in the land development, water and transportation markets. Psomas provides services to the public and private sector in civil engineering, land surveying, land planning, entitlements, GIS, natural resources and program/construction management. Projects range from large-scale master-planned developments and major highway improvements to water and wastewater treatment plants and innovative water quality and flood control improvements. Today, Psomas is a full-service consulting firm of over 800 employees working out of 20 offices scattered across five Western states and Mexico.

As a high-growth firm, Psomas has always believed in work sharing and collaboration among its existing branch offices and newly opened locations. Work sharing enables Psomas employees to balance workloads and also gives them the competitive advantage of being able to match the right people with the right skills to the right projects -- regardless of location. In order to enhance work sharing and collaboration among its offices and reduce the strain of rolling out new offices, Psomas needed to accelerate the performance of applications over its wide area network (WAN).

With its 20 percent year-over-year growth, Psomas' CIO Chris Pinckney knew that the company needed a fast and efficient solution to reduce the strain on existing network infrastructure that would also enable immediate productivity across new offices. "We knew we had a problem, but we didn't know there was such a great solution out there until we ran across Riverbed at a conference."

After considering bandwidth upgrades and point products, Psomas chose Riverbed based on the impressive test results. Psomas regularly uses 300-500 MB Auto-CAD and Bentley Microstation CAD files, and must share those among offices as well as remote and mobile workers. Transferring large files (such as 325MB files, which are common for Psomas) was once impractical for the company, because the file transfer would take hours. With Riverbed, these large file transfers now take only 14 minutes on the first pass, and edited versions of these large files can now be downloaded by remote staff in a matter of seconds -- the same amount of time that it takes Psomas' employees to access the file on a local area network (LAN).

Psomas was also faced with the challenge of adapting to a new business environment that requires more flexibility in order to meet the needs of an increasingly distributed and mobile workforce. "There are a number of factors at play," said Pinckney. "First, we have many employees that frequently work from client or job sites that need to maintain access to large files while on the road. And just as we need to enable people to work from remote locations, we must also be flexible enough to enable employees to effectively work from home whenever needed. There is a lot of competition for talent in today's market, and in order to get and retain the best people, we need to provide employees the ability to work wherever they are."

"Steelhead Mobile is a powerful tool for us," Pinckney said. "Combined with 3G cards, workers can access, download and collaborate on large files -- such as CAD or PowerPoint files -- within just a minute or two, no matter where they are in the world. We would have never even thought of being able to download these large files over a 3G card before Steelhead Mobile. And more importantly, remote and mobile employees are no longer difficult to collaborate with -- they can operate with the rest of their team just as if they were in the next cubicle. We even have a remote employee who said that, with Riverbed, he feels like he is truly 'part of the team' for the first time."

What originally began as a way to enable file-sharing and better access to information for an expanding and increasingly mobile company soon spurred a chain reaction for even more impressive performance gains and results. As an added benefit of implementing Riverbed's Steelhead appliances, Psomas was able to consolidate file servers because accessing information became so much more efficient. With centralized resources, the company was freed from spending additional time on basic IT tasks including server maintenance and upgrades.

Today, Psomas continues to roll out new offices with dramatically less IT infrastructure, making server-less remote offices a reality. This added benefit means that network rollout expenses no longer inhibit corporate growth. Along with decreased maintenance costs and an estimated one-quarter billable hour saved per employee per day, Psomas has saved more than $1 million dollars in a year with the Riverbed Steelhead solution. To date, the company has successfully leveraged Riverbed's Steelhead technology in 15 offices as well as on the laptop of each and every CAD-based remote and mobile worker. As the company continues to grow, it plans to install a Steelhead appliance in each future branch office and will continue to outfit each remote and mobile worker with Steelhead Mobile, making way for future cost savings and enhanced enterprise collaboration. Overall, Pinckney says, "When Psomas found Riverbed, it was a hallelujah moment."
