PTAs Nationwide Host Events to Raise Family Engagement, Safety Awareness

All Part of National PTA Take Your Family to School Week, February 18-22

ALEXANDRIA, VA--(Marketwire - Feb 19, 2013) - Families across the country are helping kick-off National PTA Take Your Family to School Week® by participating in special events throughout the week to increase family engagement with an emphasis, this year, on safety at home and at play. The timing of the week -- in February -- honors the day PTA was founded: February 17, 1897.

"It's simple, family engagement equals student achievement. Although it's an easy equation, Take Your Family to School Week is a perfect reminder for parents that being engaged is not only important during back-to-school time but year-round," said Betsy Landers, National PTA President.

To recognize PTAs, schools and families for their efforts to promote family engagement and raise safety awareness, National PTA presented 100 PTAs nationwide with $500 grants provided by the AXA Foundation. Each grant recipient demonstrated how they will improve family engagement and safety awareness in their school communities. A Proud National Sponsor of PTA since 2005, the AXA Foundation -- the philanthropic arm of AXA Equitable -- is again pleased to sponsor Take Your Family to School Week.

In its eighth year, National PTA collaborated with Safe Kids Worldwide to develop easy-to-understand lesson plans and take home tips that teach and remind families about being safe at home and at play, with a specific focus on prevention of fires, burns, scalds, falls and poisoning, and playground safety. A full list of resources can be found at PTA.org.
