Public Activities at Rideau Hall for the Month of June

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 31, 2011) - The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General is proud to announce the upcoming activities taking place at Rideau Hall during the month of June.

Rideau Hall is the largest official residence in Canada's Capital Region and the only one open to the public. Each year, thousands of guests and visitors come to Rideau Hall for official events and public tours.

Visitors can stroll through the 32-hectare grounds and visit the official residence. They can tour the splendid State rooms inside Rideau Hall, where the governor general honours Canadians, hosts foreign dignitaries, and exercises various duties as the representative of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Canada's Head of State.

The grounds of Rideau Hall, its gardens and historic buildings are preserved, showcased and managed by the National Capital Commission on behalf of the Government of Canada.

JUNE 4-5, 2011: DOORS OPEN OTTAWA 2011

Although its doors are open year-round, Rideau Hall is an active participant in this annual activity and is excited to host visitors during Doors Open Ottawa, June 4-5, 2011,from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Throughout the weekend, visitors are welcome to roam the historic grounds of Rideau Hall at a leisurely pace and learn about our country's past, stop in for a picnic, and enjoy the play structure nearby with family and friends. Guides are available to take visitors on a guided tour of the residence.

JUNE 22, 2011: ANNUAL INSPECTION OF THE CEREMONIAL GUARD

Come and join His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, for the Annual Inspection of the Ceremonial Guard, at Rideau Hall, on Wednesday, June 22, 2011.

Witness the pageantry, precision and colour of the Relief of the Sentries, which runs from June 27 to August 26, every hour, on the hour, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sentries are led by a piper and march to their posts in front of the residence and at Sussex Gate.

The Ceremonial Guard performs a variety of public duties in Ottawa between late June and the end of August. In addition to sentry duty at Rideau Hall, they perform in the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony on Parliament Hill; in the mounting of guards of honour during visits by dignitaries; and in public concerts, military functions or other ceremonies throughout the National Capital Region.

JUNE 25, 2011: ANNUAL CHEO TEDDY BEARS' PICNIC AT RIDEAU HALL

A fun-filled day of family activities awaits you on the grounds of Rideau Hall, on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at the 28th Annual Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) Teddy Bears' Picnic.

The day will kick off at 8 a.m. with a celebrity pancake breakfast and opening ceremony. The day will feature continuous stage entertainment, rides and games. The B*A*S*H tent—Bear Ambulatory Surgical Hospital—will be open to repair teddy bears.

VISITOR CENTRE OPEN DAILY FROM 10 A.M. TO 5 P.M. UNTIL SEPTEMBER 5

Stop by the Visitor Centre, where you will learn about the role and responsibilities of the governor general, as well as the history of Rideau Hall, through an interactive exhibit, or browse through the gift shop for Canadian souvenirs.

PUBLIC TOURS OF THE RESIDENCE ARE OFFERED DAILY

In June, reservations are required on weekdays. On Saturdays and Sundays, the residence is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (no reservations required).

Rideau Hall is located at 1 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0A1, a 3.5-kilometre walk from Parliament Hill.
