Public Consultation Period Extended

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 28, 2011) - Oshawa residents will have an additional two weeks to review and comment on the environmental assessment related to a project under consideration for the Oshawa Harbour. To ensure all public comments are received and considered, the public consultation period on the Environmental Assessment Screening Report related to an application for funding for an ethanol facility has now been extended to August 12, 2011.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is considering an application for financial assistance by FarmTech Energy Corporation to construct and operate a 210-million-litre ethanol fuel production facility. Before making a decision, AAFC invited public comment on the Screening Report, beginning on June 23. This public consultation follows earlier consultations with interested stakeholder groups.

This application is being considered under the ecoAgriculture Biofuels Capital initiative (ecoABC) which provides an opportunity for agricultural producers to diversify their economic base and participate in the biofuels industry through equity investment in production facilities that create local demand for farmers' products. AAFC will not make a final decision on funding until public comments have been received and considered.

The process for considering ecoABC applications includes an environmental assessment which, in this case, paid special attention to the Second Marsh. This assessment concluded that potential impacts should be minimal to low. The Screening Report and supporting documents may be accessed for review in the following ways:

  • The Environmental Assessment Screening Report can be requested from the ecoAgriculture Biofuels Capital Initiative at ecoABC@agr.gc.ca or can be accessed from the Canadian Environment Assessment Registry at www.ceaa-acee.gc.ca (project 08-01-42395).
  • FarmTech's supporting environmental assessment documents can be accessed from FarmTech Energy Corporation at www.farmtechenergy.com.
  • Copies of the Environmental Assessment Screening Report and supporting environmental assessment documents are available for viewing at the Oshawa Public Library, McLaughlin Branch.

Interested individuals and groups are invited to send their comments in the official language of their choice to:
