Public Invited to Open Farm Day Across New Brunswick

FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - Sept. 21, 2007) - Open Farm Day is taking place at 33 farms across the province Sunday, September 23. It is an opportunity for the public to meet some of the province's local food producers and see where food comes from.

"Open Farm Day is a great way to experience life on the farm" said the Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board. "Our farm producers provide the public with safe, high-quality food every day and I encourage the public to visit and learn about the important work done on the farm."

"Farming in New Brunswick is a productive, innovative and modern industry, which is an important part of the economic and social fabric of this province," said Agriculture and Aquaculture Minister Ronald Ouellette. "Open Farm Day is about getting to know more about how the high-quality and healthy food is produced while providing an enjoyable family experience."

Open Farm Day is presented across the region in partnership with the Sobeys grocery chain and serves as the kick-off for the Canadian Agriculture and Food Celebration (CAFC). The celebration is designed to spotlight the importance of agriculture and the food industry. Through the CAFC, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada supports agriculture awareness projects that improve public understanding and support of the agriculture and agri-food sector.

The Open Farm Day theme in New Brunswick this year is "Farmers Feed Communities."

The agriculture and agri-food industry in New Brunswick includes 2, 776 farms and 100 processing plants. The industry employs over 14, 000 people with farm cash receipts of $450 million.

"We hope to see a good number of New Brunswickers through our farm gates September 23rd to learn about where their food comes from," said Jennifer MacDonald, Agricultural Alliance of NB and Chair Person for the Promotions and Relations Committee. "It is exciting to have this opportunity to share the passion that farmers have for producing their part of the food chain. Open Farm Day is a chance to see a snap shot of farm life, come out and enjoy our down home hospitality."
