Public Meeting: $28 Million in Cuts to Hospital Services Threatened in Scarborough and Ajax

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Oct. 21, 2013) - Ontario Health Coalition -

Attn: Assignment Editor

When: Tuesday October 22, 7:00 - 9:00 pm
Where: Malvern Recreation Centre (Gym/Mezzanine) located at 30 Sewells Road in Scarborough
Who: Dr. Larissa Tam, obstetrician and gynecologist, Lillie Johnson, retired community health nurse, Ruskin Ramsundar, owner/publisher of the Durham Citizen News, and Natalie Mehra, executive director of the Ontario Health Coalition.
What: The Scarborough Hospital and the Ajax Hospital are facing $28 million in cuts to services next year. The service cuts proposed at the Scarborough Hospital are very deep and will hurt patients. There is also a proposed merger of the Scarborough Hospital and the Rouge Valley Health System. The provincial government has frozen funding for hospitals across Ontario, which has pushed many hospitals into deficit simply to maintain existing services. It is illegal for a hospital to run a deficit and this has led to millions of dollars in services cut in Scarborough and Ajax, including two operating rooms, 20 surgical beds, arthritis care, physiotherapy and more than 100 registered nurse positions at the Scarborough Hospital. All are welcome and encouraged to attend a public meeting in Scarborough to share information about these cuts and to help build a local campaign to stop hospital cuts.
