Public Meeting: $28 Million in Cuts to Hospital Services Threatened in Scarborough and Ajax

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Oct. 29, 2013) -

Attn: Assignment Editor

When: Tuesday October 29, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Where: Ajax Public Library, Main Branch (Rotary Room) located at 55 Harwood Ave South, Ajax
What: The Scarborough Hospital and the Ajax Hospital are facing $28 million in cuts to services next year. There is also a proposed merger of the Scarborough Hospital and the Rouge Valley Health System. The provincial government has frozen funding for hospitals across Ontario, which has pushed many hospitals into deficit simply to maintain existing services. It is illegal for a hospital to run a deficit and this has led to millions of dollars in services cut in Scarborough and Ajax. In 2008, facing a deficit, the Rouge Valley in Ajax underwent a barrage of cuts including 36 hospital beds, 220 nurses, health professionals and support staff positions and mental health services and beds. Now, the merger being studied includes proposals to further ration services between the Scarborough Birchmount, Scarborough General and Centenary Hospitals to cut up to $28 million per year. These cuts will hurt patient care in Ajax. All are welcome and encouraged to attend a public meeting in Ajax to share information and to help build a local campaign to stop hospital cuts.
