Public Safety Minister Commends CORCAN Advisory Board for Work with Offenders

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 28, 2011) - The Honourable Vic Toews, Public Safety Minister, made the following statement after meeting today with members of the CORCAN Advisory Board:

"I was pleased to have an opportunity to speak with CORCAN's Advisory Board as they held their annual meeting today in Ottawa. CORCAN plays a key role in the Correctional Service of Canada's (CSC) mandate to enhance public safety.

CORCAN is a key rehabilitation program for CSC. It provides employment training to offenders in federal correctional institutions. By providing offenders with the work experience and skills, they can become responsible, productive and law-abiding members of society. They can successfully reintegrate into the community, and their risk of reoffending is significantly reduced. As a result, our streets are safer.

This board's networks and connections within various sectors and organizations will play an important role in generating new and innovative opportunities for offenders in institutions and in the community.

I am confident that this group will succeed at fostering new opportunities for our offenders, in the interest of building a safer Canada."
