Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day Applauds Latest Disruption to Illegal Satellite Signal Trade

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - May 3, 2007) - Today, the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, issued this statement following the success of Operation Costume, which led to the arrest of three men in Montreal and the seizure of material that may have been used to steal satellite signals.

"Operation Costume provides another example of great work the RCMP is doing to tackle crime. Those arrested appear to have profited significantly by providing information and equipment to help clients decode satellite signals illegally.

With more than 2,000 clients, their activities alone led to estimated lost legitimate revenue of $1.2 million. The Canadian economy suffers annual losses of more than $300 million from the illegal theft and sale of satellite signals.

On behalf of Canada's New Government, I would like to commend the RCMP, Industry Canada and Bell Express Vu for their joint efforts in helping to curb illegal satellite signal trade. This government remains fully committed to ensuring our law enforcement agencies have the tools and resources they need to fulfill their policing duties effectively."
