Public Safety Minister Toews Commends RCMP on Manitoba Drug Arrests

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 9, 2011) - Today, the Honourable Vic Toews, Canada's Public Safety Minister, recognized the successful efforts of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Manitoba on charging 34 individuals as part of Project DEVELOP, a long-term investigation targeting street-level drug trafficking in the RCMP East District. The RCMP has laid over 100 charges and seized drugs and firearms.

"These arrests and seizures are welcome news for families and communities in Manitoba. The production and trafficking of illicit drugs is one of the root causes of violent crime," said Minister Toews. "Our government commends the efforts of the RCMP in Manitoba for its success in taking harmful drugs off our streets and out of our communities."

Project DEVELOP was initiated in November 2010 and largely focused on street level drug trafficking in the region.
