Public Safety Minister Vic Toews Highlights Initiatives That Will Benefit Public Safety in Canada's North

YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES--(Marketwire - Aug. 9, 2012) - The Honourable Vic Toews, Canada's Minister of Public Safety, was in Yellowknife today to tour RCMP "G" Division Headquarters and meet with men and women on the front line. He also met separately with stakeholders to discuss the government's ongoing commitment to treat law-abiding hunters, farmers and sport shooters fairly.

"I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to meet with Yellowknife's finest and to hear their concerns and accomplishments keeping the streets safe in the Northwest Territories," said Minister Toews. "Our Government made it clear that we would work closely with the RCMP to take action to develop tools to restore pride in Canada's National Police Force, which is why I tabled the Enhancing RCMP Accountability Act."

In Yellowknife, Minister Toews also met with key stakeholders to discuss issues surrounding firearms including repealing the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry, reducing the administrative burden on firearms owners and effective strategies to tackle gun crime and make Canadian communities safer.

"Coming to Yellowknife, it is very clear that the people of the Northwest Territories do not support measures that criminalize law-abiding Canadians," said Minister Toews. "In Ottawa, this message has rarely been delivered on their behalf, however they can rest assured, our Government will fight any and all measures to bring back the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry."

The Harper Government has made strong progress in helping keep Canadian streets and communities safe and secure. Today's roundtable will help the Government continue to move forward on measures that will actually keep Canadians safe, unlike the failed long-gun registry.
