Public Service Announcement: Increased Flight Activity Around Yellowknife During Annual NORAD Exercise

YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES--(Marketwired - Oct. 17, 2016) - The Canadian North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) Region would like to inform people in Yellowknife and surrounding areas to expect an increased military presence, flights and noise levels between October 17 and 21, 2016, due to NORAD's annual VIGILANT SHIELD exercise.

Security at the base in Yellowknife will be reinforced and photography of the flight line will remain prohibited during the exercise. The public can also expect to see military flights as part of the training scenarios. All training has been closely coordinated with Air Traffic Control authorities.

During VIGILANT SHIELD 17, Yellowknife is one of several locations hosting the exercise's live-fly field training. There will be participants from the Canadian and American armed forces in the community over the time period, including U.S. Air Force (USAF) F-15 Eagle fighter jets.

NORAD forces will be supported by Canadian NORAD Region Headquarters in Winnipeg, Man.; the Canadian Air Defence Sector at 22 Wing North Bay, Ont.; and Canadian Forces Station Alert, Nunavut.

NORAD is a bi-national military organization formed by a partnership between Canada and the United States to provide maritime warning, aerospace warning and aerospace control for North America. For 58 years, NORAD has worked to detect, deter, and defend against all threats to Canadian and U.S. air sovereignty through a network of alert fighters, tankers, airborne early warning aircraft, and ground based air defense assets cued by interagency and defense surveillance radars. NORAD also provides surveillance and operational control of Canadian and U.S. airspace.
