Purshade Helps Pineapple Growers Forgo Traditional Solar Protection Methods and Deliver Higher-Value Fruit

Producers From Tropical Regions Around the World Applaud Dramatic Reductions in Sun Damage and Improved Crop Production

FREMONT, CA--(Marketwire - Jun 22, 2011) - Purfresh, a leading provider of clean technologies that purify, protect, and preserve the global food supply chain, today announced that pineapple growers from major tropical growing regions around the world have achieved a significant reduction in heat stress and sun damage with the company's solar stress protectant -- Purshade®. Pineapple crops treated with Purshade show increases in biomass production and improvements in crop quality characteristics, including size, color, and weight, resulting in fewer culls, and higher-quality, higher-value fruit.

Grown in hot, tropical climates, pineapples are susceptible to heat stress and sun damage, which has been shown to limit plant production as well as deteriorate or discolor tissue that can render the fruit unsellable. Based on Advanced Reflectance Technology™ (ART™), Purshade has been engineered to prevent solar damage and heat stress by reflecting harmful wavelengths of solar radiation such as ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) away from the plant, while still allowing transmission of sufficient sunlight for photosynthesis. Laboratory results show Purshade reflects as much as 85-95 percent of harmful UV radiation, and has been shown to keep plant surfaces 7-10 degrees Fahrenheit (3-6 degrees Celsius) cooler than untreated plants.

"No other solution compares to Purshade's performance, ease of use, or effectiveness of promoting a healthier crop during the presence of extreme solar stress during the hot summer months of Maui," said Mr. Brian Igersheim, director of quality control for Hali'imaile Pineapple. "Using Purshade last season, we experienced a significant increase in overall plant health, which helped contribute to our increase of tons per acre harvested."

Purshade is currently being used to protect pineapple crops in the Dominican Republic, Ghana, Mexico, Australia, Costa Rica, the Caribbean, and the United States. In addition, Purshade is being used in trials in the Philippines, Kenya, and Thailand with intentions to commercialize the product. Growers throughout these regions report Purshade's ease of use and high level of effectiveness has enabled them to discontinue use of more costly, labor-intensive methods of sun protection.

"We experienced mixed to poor results with more traditional solutions," said Mr. Victor Salgado, a pineapple grower in Mexico. "Our Purshade treated plants are healthier and less stressed from the sun. The surface temperature of the Purshade treated fruit remained cooler than the non-treated newspaper-wrapped fruit, and we experienced decreased UV burn along with reduced labor costs."

Developed by the experts in solar stress crop protection, the calcium-based Purshade family of products are easy to mix, apply, and remove; are highly compatible with other products; and can be applied with standard spray equipment. Incorporating a Purshade solar protectant into a preventative spray program, for conventional or organic production, helps maximize the value of every treated acre by reducing solar-related losses, increasing yield potential, enhancing crop quality, and improving water use efficiency.

"With Purshade, pineapple growers from Central America to Australia have experienced more intense color, longer storage life, and increased pack-out -- characteristics that make their products more marketable against global competition," said Mr. Riley Reynolds, director of global development and technical sales support for Purfresh. "Working in cooperation with our distributors and growers in more than half dozen countries, replicated trials and studies prove time and again that Purshade helps growers reduce losses associated with solar stress, maximize crop production, and improve their overall return on investment."
