Q4 Mobile Base Station Contracts Surge With Nokia Siemens Networks on Top

Momentum Remains in Asia Pacific; China Continues to Drive Demand for 3G; HSPA+ Emerging as Next Gen Technology for 2009

REDWOOD CITY, CA--(Marketwire - February 13, 2009) - EJL Wireless Research announces its fourth quarter 2008 base station contract analysis results. Despite the global financial crisis that has engulfed the wireless telecom industry, fourth quarter base station contracts totaled 182, increasing from 112 in Q3.

"Nokia Siemens Networks secured 62% of total contract awards during the December 31, 2008 ended quarter, beating Huawei (13.7%) and ZTE (13.2%). Chinese OEMs captured 27% of overall contracts while each major base station vendor secured at least one win during the quarter. We have included unannounced contracts from Nokia Siemens Networks in Q4 in our database," says founder and President, Earl Lum.

"Demand remained heavily concentrated in Asia Pacific while surprisingly; Western Europe was the second most active region during the quarter. Chinese OEMs continue to dominate the CDMA2000 segment as they captured 67% of global contracts in Q4. Initial HSPA+ contract awards to Ericsson in Scandinavia point to a significant increase in 2009 for Western Europe," says Lum.
