Quality & Safety Innovator Stacey Funt, MD Joins Accountable Radiology Advisors

COLUMBUS, OH--(Marketwired - Apr 14, 2014) - Accountable Radiology Advisors (ARA), www.accountableradiologyadvisors.com, a healthcare consulting practice that specializes in advancing the delivery of radiology services, announced today Stacey A. Funt, MD, a 17-year veteran in body and oncology imaging, has joined ARA as a consultant.

"Dr. Funt has expertise as a clinical radiologist in both community hospital and leading academic medical center settings," said Teri Yates, ARA's Founder and Principal Consultant. "She has a passion for protecting patients from the harmful effects of excess radiation exposure and for leveraging radiology's capabilities to positively impact the outcome for cancer patients through effective screening and early diagnosis. This expertise aligns well with ARA's mission to improve the quality and safety of radiology services and fulfill radiology's potential to impact population health."

Dr. Funt is well versed in the design and implementation of multi-disciplinary radiation dose reduction programs. In addition to her work with clinicians, Dr. Funt developed the "My Imaging Records" iPhone app, a free personal record keeper for individuals to track imaging exams and learn about radiation safety. Projects like the iPhone app demonstrate her understanding of how patient engagement is an essential component of healthcare quality. When quoted in a recent article in Imaging Economics Dr. Funt explained. "I personally believe that patients must be engaged in their own healthcare to have the best care and the least amount of waste. It takes an integrated team collaborating together, including patients, to get the best outcomes."

Dr. Funt utilizes National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines to educate consulting clients and clinicians in her own radiology practice on optimal standards for screening, evaluation and monitoring of oncology patients. A significant part of her contributions at ARA will fall within this realm, and the firm is currently developing a set of resources and tools to support organizations that offer lung cancer screening programs.

"Expansion of reimbursement for CT lung cancer screening removes a significant barrier but hospitals have other needs to ensure the success of these programs," said Yates, explaining that translating the rigorous program components established in academic medical centers into the community hospital setting is not easy. "In addition to replicating complex program criteria within an organization that may have fewer resources, community hospitals offering lung cancer screening must also find a way to encourage participation by patients. Few programs have cracked the code on that yet, and ARA is working on solutions to help our clients accelerate patient volume growth."

Before joining ARA Dr. Funt spent the last several years working as an attending radiologist in two NY area community hospitals. Before that, she was an attending radiologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and an assistant professor of Radiology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.
