Quebecers Have Been Eating Fondue for 25 Years!

To celebrate, Lassonde Specialties will donate 25 cents for each Canton Fondue Broth sold during the Holiday period

SAINT-DAMASE, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 27, 2006) - With winter fast approaching, Lassonde Specialties Inc. (part of the big Lassonde Industries family) is proud to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its Canton brand. To underscore this anniversary and to share with the community, the company - based in the Monteregie region - is associating with the Fondation Ressources-Jeunesse (www.frj.qc.ca) that fosters the sustainable integration of youth into the labour force and their career development. That's why, for every unit of Canton Fondue Broth purchased between November 15 and December 30, 2006, the company will donate 25 cents to the foundation, up to a total of $25,000.
Fondue, a Quebec phenomenon
According to Lassonde Specialties, the phenomenon of fondue parties is purely a Quebec tradition that grew with the arrival of the first Canton Fondue Broth on retailers' shelves in Quebec in 1981. In fact, there are few places in the world where people eat as much fondue as Quebec.
From specialized product to mass-market product
Canton Fondue products were originally available only in specialized fine food shops. "It seemed few grocers were able to see the potential of these new products," explained Jean Messier, President and Chief Executive Officer of Lassonde Specialties. "But when they saw customers were buying more meat and vegetables when they purchased a can of fondue broth and some sauces, all grocery stores started offering our products."

Sales of Canton Fondue Bouillon have registered annual growth of more than 10% over the past 25 years. Today, all the main supermarket banners in Quebec offer the Canton Fondue line of products, meaning that Lassonde Specialties has a more than 60% share of the market.
Next objective: increase sales in the rest of the country
Over the next few years, Lassonde Specialities intends to conquer the rest of the Canadian market. "Our research shows that a great proportion of Canadians residing outside Quebec already own a fondue pot, but don't seem to use it," added Mr. Messier. "Over the next few months, we will launch several initiatives to invite Canadians to take their fondue pots out of the cupboard more often by providing them with, notably, fabulous fondue recipes and suggestions."Ideas and original recipes for a successful fondue evening
This season, Lassonde Specialties will propose several recipes on its Web site at www.specialiteslassonde.com. "At Christmastime, why not have a turkey fondue," suggests Mr. Messier, "add other game meat, like venison or wild boar, and you'll have a really special feast to impress your guests!"
