Quebec's Chartered Accountants Want to Save 70,000 Lives in May

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - May 4, 2009) - In May, Quebec's chartered accountants will assist Hema-Quebec in carrying out its mission. Since one donation can save four lives, with the support of the 17,500 members in our network, we could make a significant contribution. To give blood is to give life.

To raise awareness in the accounting profession about the importance of giving blood, Quebec's chartered accountants will take part in the blood drive to be held in the lobby of Place Ville-Marie from May 4 to 8, 2009.

Throughout the month of May, CAs will also be able to give blood at one of Quebec's three GLOBULE centres, i.e. from May 9 to 31 at the Centre Laval and Place Versailles, Montreal, GLOBULE centres and from May 1 to 31 at the Place Laurier GLOBULE centre in Quebec City.

"We are very proud that Hema-Quebec chose May to be CA month. Many chartered accountants are already regular blood donors, but we hope that this initiative will raise awareness among others and encourage thousands of CAs to join this very worthy cause. We also urge accounting firms to show their generosity by encouraging their employees to participate," said Jean-Pierre Allaire, FCA, Chair of the Ordre.

While the need for blood is constant, only 3% of Quebecers who qualify to give blood contribute to the collective blood supply managed by Hema-Quebec. To meet the province's needs, Hema-Quebec must collect a minimum of 1,000 donations per day.

With over 17,500 members and 1,900 candidates for the practice of the profession, the Ordre des comptables agrees du Quebec carries out its primary mission to protect the public by enforcing the most demanding admission criteria and the highest professional and ethical standards.
