HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - Aug. 26, 2013) - The union representing nursing home workers at Queens Manor in Liverpool has received an overwhelming strike vote from its 56 members.
CUPE National Representative Marianne Welsh says, "Local 2648 voted 98 percent in favour of job action, in support of its bargaining committee. The main outstanding issue is an employer demand for a concession to the provision for sick leave accumulation."
Says Welsh, "The workers are currently in a legal strike position, meaning that they can exercise their legal right to strike following 48 hours notice to the Minister of Labour and Advanced Education. However, as of this afternoon, both sides have agreed to resume talks through a conciliation officer. The conciliation date has not yet been scheduled."
CUPE 2648 represents continuing care assistants (CCAs), cooks, dietary workers, environmental services workers, licensed practical nurses (LPNs), maintenance workers, personal care workers, physiotherapy/occupational therapy assistants, and recreation programmers.
