Quit Smoking and Save Pounds on Your Policies

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - March 13, 2012) - As National No Smoking Day approaches, Swinton is urging homeowners to quit their smoking habit and save pounds on their home insurance policies.

Nearly a third of all house fires are caused by smoking and with more people entertaining at home, smokers are often deemed by insurers as higher risk resulting in higher house insurance quotes. Many insurers will request smoking information during the quote process.

It is estimated by Swinton that non-smokers could save up to 10% on their home insurance policy compared to their smoking counterparts.

For those who are unable to break the habit Swinton is offering the following tips:

  • Ensure you install a smoke alarm in your house both upstairs and downstairs

  • If possible smoke outside, this will also prevent lingering smoke odours which could put off potential buyers if you were selling your property

  • Never ever smoke in bed - it's estimated that 9% of house fires are caused by people falling asleep in bed whilst smoking

  • Keep matches and lighters away from children

  • Never leave a cigarette unattended

Steve Chelton, Claims Manager at Swinton said, "As well as being a very expensive habit, smoking can also increase your house insurance premium so this in itself is a great incentive to quit and save money. However, on a more serious note, whether you're a smoker or not, it is vital to install smoke alarms in your home as they can help to save lives."
