Rainy River Begins Second Phase Drill Program-15,000 Metres Planned

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 23, 2006) - Nelson W. Baker, President of Rainy River Resources Ltd. (TSX VENTURE:RR) is pleased to report that a 15,000 metre drill program is set to begin today on the Rainy River Project centered in Richardson Township, approximately 80 kilometres south of Kenora, Ontario. The Rainy River Project consists of over 25,000 hectares covering a poorly exposed and under-explored greenstone belt that hosts significant gold-silver-zinc mineralization which is characteristic in style and origin to the Bousquet Camp in Abitibi, Quebec.

The drilling program, under the supervision of Clark Exploration Consulting Inc. (Thunder Bay, Ontario) and Caracle Creek International Consulting Inc. (Sudbury, Ontario), will focus on defining a NI 43-101 gold and base metal resource in the #17 Zone and continue to explore additional high priority gold targets defined from Rainy's recently completed 17-hole Phase I drill program.

In addition to this aggressive drill program, a VTEM airborne magnetic and electromagnetic survey will be flown over Rainy's large land package during the first week in February. VTEM's ability to record conductive mineral bodies deeper than most other survey methods is considered to be a valuable exploration tool for this till covered area.

"Clearly, the potential for defining a commercial grade gold deposit or deposits within the 100%-owned Rainy River Project is considered to be above average," said Nelson Baker, Rainy's President.
