Rainy River Project: Drilling Confirms Consistent Gold Values for 180 Metres Down Plunge-#17 Zone

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 20, 2006) - Rainy River Resources Ltd. (TSX VENTURE:RR) ("Rainy") is pleased to report the results for the final two holes of a seventeen (17) hole initial phase drill program, NR05-16 and NR05-17, designed to trace the down-plunge extent of the higher grade gold mineralized zone intersected by NR05-05 (2.21 g/t Au over 69.95 metres) and Nuinsco hole NR96-45 (5.1 g/t Au over 62.60 metres) in the #17 Zone deposit. The #17 Zone deposit differs from most Archean gold deposits in that it is composed of polymetallic sulphides in felsic host rocks. The Rainy River Project is located approximately 80 kilometres south of Kenora, Ontario and is centered along a 20 kilometre segment of a poorly exposed greenstone belt.

Highlights:

- NR05-16 and NR-05-17 intersected 1.58 g/t Au over 28.63 metres and 2.84 g/t Au over 29.50 metres respectively.

- Four holes, NR05-17, NR96-45, NR05-05 and NR05-16, have now defined a consistent gold-rich zone with accessory silver and zinc values for 180 metres down plunge.

- The gold-rich zone remains open to depth.

Rainy is especially pleased with the continuity of the gold mineralization within this high grade zone in the #17 Zone. An important characteristic of the #17 Zone deposit is that the higher grade gold lenses and/or "shoots" have recurring moderate to steep westward plunges in the longitudinal plane. Of note, significant base metal mineralization, particularly zinc, accompanies the gold and silver mineralization. Four holes have now tested the high grade gold mineralization for a plunge distance of 180 metres and the zone remains open both to depth and along strike. The results are summarized below:

Summary of Down-Plunge Intersections (#17 Zone):

------------------------------------------------------------
Core D/P Gold
Hole No. From To Width (m) (g/t)
------------------------------------------------------------
NR05-17 86.50 116.00 29.50(i) 40 2.84
------------------------------------------------------------
NR96-45 50.50 113.10 62.60(i) 80 5.10
------------------------------------------------------------
NR05-05 138.50 208.45 69.95(i) 130 2.21
------------------------------------------------------------
NR05-16 166.37 195.00 28.63(i) 180 1.58
------------------------------------------------------------
(i) Lengths quoted are core lengths, the true widths are
estimated to be 70% of the above intervals.

Table 1, appended to this release, provides the best intervals for holes NR05-16 and NR05-17. Drill hole NR05-17 intersected the high grade zone 40 metres up-plunge from NR96-45, a diagonal hole drilled into the #17 Zone deposit in 1996. The deepest hole, NR05-16, was designed to test the zone 50 metres down-plunge from NR05-05; however, due to a significant deflection in the hole to the north, the higher grade core of the zone was not intersected and remains to be tested in the next drill program scheduled to begin on January 23.

A location plan showing the location of all seventeen holes drilled to date in Richardson Township has been posted on Rainy's website www.rainyriverresources.com.
