RAJAR Data Release - Quarter 3, 2005 - released at 7.00am, October 27, 2005.

90% of UK population listen to the radio

UK radio audience quarterly data, compiled by RAJAR Ltd (Radio Joint Audience Research) is released at 7.00am today, Thursday October 27, 2005.

The number of people tuning in to their radios in Quarter 3, 2005 was 44,385,000, down 0.5% quarter on quarter (Q3, 2005 vs. Q2, 2005) but up 1.9% year on year (Q3, 2005 vs. Q3, 2004).

(This weekly reach figure is the number of people (adults 15+) in the UK who listened to a radio station for at least five minutes in the course of an average week during Quarter 3, 2005).

Additional data compiled by RAJAR and to be announced later today reveals that radio listeners are choosing to tune in to their favourite stations via a wider range of platforms and devices than ever before.

Digital TV - The number of adults who have ever tuned in to the radio via digital TV has risen to 35.1% (September 2005) up 23% year on year and 72% since September 2003: while the percentage of listeners who tune in at least once a week now stands at 19.9%, up 15% year on year and up 59% since September 2003.

Internet - Listening via the Internet is also on the increase with the number of adults who say they have visited a station web site rising to 28.3%: while those who report they have listened to a UK national station via the Internet has reached 13.5%.

DAB ownership and listening - Home ownership of digital radio sets has risen from 3.9% in March 2004 to a record 10.5% in September 2005. The number of adults listening to digital only services has risen to 4.1 million listeners per week from 3.2 million listeners a year ago and 3 million listeners two years ago.

Mobile phones - The percentage of adults who tune into the radio via their mobile phones has also risen to a record 6.1% from 5.2% in September 2004 and 3.7% in September 2003.
