Dr. David Leidich, a chiropractor with Chiropractic and Wellness Center, announced that the practice will begin offering yoga classes to existing patients. The classes will begin in September and run for 10 to 12 weeks. The first class will be a free introductory class for existing patients that covers the fundamentals of yoga. While the introduction class will be offered at no charge to existing patients, they are limited to the first eight patients who sign up. The series of classes after the introductory class will have an associated fee.

The description of the introductory class states that patients will, "rejuvenate and get stronger with yoga and Tai Chi." The class is designed to help participants deal with stress effectively through breathing techniques and focusing on flexibility and strength. The introductory class is designed to be suitable for patients of all ages and ability levels. Elements of Tai Chi will be incorporated into the class to improve the flow of energy in the body. In Sanskrit, yoga means union and is a holistic practice that incorporates the mind, body and spirit through various poses and breathing exercises. Tai Chi, a traditional Chinese art, uses slow, meditative and flowing movements to improve health and vitality.

"Yoga is a natural complement to chiropractic treatment, as both share similar whole body philosophies," said Dr. Leidich. "Chiropractic and yoga work together to improve posture, range of motion, and flexibility. We are excited to offer this important wellness opportunity to our patients."

Practitioners of yoga are said to enjoy both physical and mental benefits. Studies show that benefits of yoga include increased flexibility, core strengthening, improved posture, decreased anxiety, and reduced stress. Yoga may also help manage chronic health conditions, including cancer, depression, pain, anxiety, fatigue, and sleep insomnia.

"For patients recovering from a musculoskeletal injury, yoga is one of the best things you can do for your mind, body, and spirit," said Dr. Leidich. "The health benefits are on par with aerobic exercises. Yoga does more than just center the mind. Benefits include increased energy levels and even weight loss."

Studies suggest that yoga may also improve the body's ability to naturally manage pain and promote internal healing.

"Our Durham and Raleigh pain management patients may also experience a decrease in neck pain, back pain, and headache," said Dr. Leidich. "Yoga naturally complements adjustments from a chiropractor by restoring alignment to the spine and improving posture. Correct alignment can reduce pressure on nerves, which causes pain."

Individuals who are interested in the complimentary yoga class can learn more on the practice's website, The website will publish the class schedule, including the start date and hours. Patients will need to bring their own mat to the class.
