Raleigh-Durham Chiropractor Announces Successful Yoga Class Series

DURHAM, NC--(Marketwire - Feb 2, 2012) - Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Durham, N.C. announced that the wellness center is wrapping up their weekly yoga and tai chi classes. According to the center, the classes have been extremely popular with patients and have helped improve mobility, functionality, flexibility and the overall health of many patients. The practice provides natural pain management, chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy for the treatment of chronic pain and injuries.

Raleigh-Durham chiropractor Dr. David Leidich announced that the Chiropractic and Wellness Center is concluding the practice's eight-week series of yoga and tai chi classes. The classes began last fall with two introductory classes to yoga fundamentals, and have continued weekly through the fall and winter on Monday nights. The Center said that they will resume these classes in May of this year.

"Our fall/winter yoga and tai chi series has been a tremendous success," Leidich said. "These practices naturally complement chiropractic adjustments by promoting internal healing and helping the body achieve balance and flexibility."

Yoga is a holistic practice that focuses on the union between the body's movement and breath. Practitioners hold poses, known as asanas, to build strength and flexibility. According to Dr. Leidich, yoga also helps elevate mood, center the mind and increases the flow of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.

Tai chi is based on the traditional Chinese healing art of meditative, flowing movements to improve breathing and posture.

"For patients who are recovering from an injury, yoga and tai chi bring important physical and mental benefits," Leidich said. "Studies also suggest that yoga may improve the body's ability to naturally manage pain. These classes naturally complement our practice's commitment to whole body wellness and helping patients heal."

Ajay Bhatt, who is a certified Sivananda yoga instructor, has taught the class series. Bhatt grew up in India and has a diverse background in both yoga and tai chi. During the class series, Bhatt has focused on therapeutic movements to restore proper alignment to the musculoskeletal system. The movements bring Durham and Raleigh pain management patients natural relief.

According to both Bhatt and Leidich, these classes have helped teach patients that mindful movement is a safe way to manage chronic back pain, neck pain and headaches. The classes also help to reduce stress and enhance well being.

"All too often, individuals who suffer from chronic pain avoid physical activity out of fear that any movement may aggravate this pain," Leidich said. "While certain activities can be harmful, the mindful movements of yoga and tai chi are a natural and safe way to strengthen the body and promote internal healing. Our classes have been specially tailored to our patient's wellness needs and injuries, and have made a tremendous difference in their successful recovery."
