Rally Re-Building Post Secondary Education

Queen's Park, Toronto, Thursday, February 3, at 2:00 p.m. Attention: Assignment Editor, Education Editor, Media Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - Feb. 2, 2005) - MEDIA ADVISORY

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 3 at 2:00 p.m.

Ontario colleges and universities are awaiting the review of post secondary education in Ontario that was conducted by former Premier Bob Rae and is scheduled for release in early February.

Labour, parents, community activists and students have spoken up at Town Hall meetings, Round Table discussions and made submissions to the Rae Review panel across the province since October, 2004.

The panel heard that the post secondary system should be a public system, open and accessible to all the people of Ontario. That faculty and staff shortages at colleges and universities are such a pressing need that full-time permanent staff must be hired immediately. Tuition fees should not only remain frozen but reduced and eventually eliminated. Presentations to the panel wanted to see a quality system that was affordable, accessible and well maintained. Crumbling facilities and deferred maintenance needs to be addressed. The Rae Review Panel also heard that apprenticeships and training must maintain the integrity of the whole trades not just 'pieces' of a trade.

Join the Ontario Federation of Labour and the Canadian Federation of Students at the Rally to support adequate public funding for the post secondary education system to address the urgent needs of understaffing, tuition hikes, and crumbling schools. Join the Rally to support a high quality post secondary education system that is accessible to everyone in Ontario.

Speaking at the Rally will be union leaders, student activists, educators and community advocates.
