Rand Group Underwrites Houston Symphony's Innovative Musically Speaking Event

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwired - November 13, 2014) - Music may be a universal language, but the Houston Symphony is using the cultural background of its new conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada to bring music -- and commentary -- to a whole new set of ears.

Rand Group is underwriting a special evening presentation of Beethoven with follow-up commentary and discussion all conducted in Spanish as part of the Symphony's weekend-long launch of its Musically Speaking with Andrés series.

The Spanish language presentation takes place Sunday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Stude Concert Hall in the Rice University Shepherd School of Music, in Houston. The performance spotlights Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, followed by Édouard Lalo's Symphonie espagnole, featuring brilliant Spanish violin melodies performed by HSO Concertmaster Frank Huang, plus American composer Gabriela Lena Frank's Three Latin-American Dances. Tickets range from $25 to $85.

The format adds a new dimension to this season, something that members of HS's Board of Trustees hope the public will enjoy.

"This is one of the most innovative initiatives the Houston Symphony has taken on, and we're thrilled to be part of something that embraces the classic music," said Trustee and Rand Group President & CEO Ron Rand.

"We hope this performance will resonate with all those who value the Spanish language and culture, and what it represents for those here in Houston," Rand said.

The Houston Symphony is among the top 20 symphony orchestras in the country, in a region where nearly 50 percent of the population is Hispanic.

The Musically Speaking with Andrés series continues throughout the season, with performances of the works of Shostakovich, Dvorak, and Bartok. Tickets are available through the website at www.houstonsymphony.org.

The series is sponsored by Rand Group, a professional services firm that serves the oil and gas, manufacturing, distribution, and construction segments within the state of Texas.
