Random House of Canada, McClelland & Stewart and Indigo Books and Music Inc. (TSX:IDG) have partnered to provide the opportunity for Canadians to download the full text of books by three bestselling authors: Paul Quarrington, Peter Robinson and Miriam Toews for free until 12 noon Friday, June 27th, 2008 in an online celebration of Canadian authors. Over 10 600 downloads were made across Canada in the first 24 hours of the offering, tripling the number of expected downloads to date and encouraging the extension of the promotion.

The texts of the three books, King Leary by Paul Quarrington, Friend of the Devil by Peter Robinson, and A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews are all available now for a limited time at Home as a PDF that can be downloaded onto any computer.

Lisa Charters, Vice President, Director, Online Sales & Marketing for Random House of Canada had this to say about the promotion, "We see this as a great way for readers to digitally experience a book to help them decide what they want to read next. Our experience and studies have shown that free digital downloads increase the sales of hard copies of books, by bringing attention to the book and allowing readers to test it out so they are confident in their choice."

Carolyn Beatty, Senior Vice President, Online at Indigo Books & Music Inc. says "We continue to look for innovative ways to make our online experience richer for our customers. Partnering with publishers to provide a selection of downloadable books for free gives our customers a new, free, opportunity to experience the work of some great Canadian authors."

The three books were chosen to take advantage of the CBC Canada Reads 2008 win for King Leary and the lead-up to the publication of new books by both Peter Robinson and Miriam Toews this fall. Each of the downloads also includes the first chapter of another book by these authors. King Leary includes the first chapter of The Ravine by Paul Quarrington, published this spring. King Leary is a hilarious portrait of a hockey hero looking back on his life that delighted thousands of Canadians when it won Canada Reads earlier this year. Friend of the Devil includes the first chapter of All The Colours of Darkness, Peter Robinson's new book being published this Fall. Peter Robinson is among the best mystery writers in the world and Friend of the Devil is his latest engrossing mystery featuring the beloved Inspector Banks.

A Complicated Kindness includes the first chapter of The Flying Troutmans, the new novel by Miriam Toews coming out in September. A Complicated Kindness, an endearing and poignant story of Nomi, a sixteen year old girl growing up in a small Mennonite town, won the Governor General's Award and was a fixture on bestseller lists for many months.

Hard copy books are available for purchase at all Chapters, Indigo and Coles Bookstores and online at
