Rayonier Accelerates Consolidation of IT Infrastructure With Riverbed Steelhead Appliances

Consolidates From Eight to Two Data Centers While Achieving Application Performance Gains; Improving User Satisfaction

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - December 5, 2007) - Riverbed Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: RVBD), the technology and market leader in wide-area data services (WDS), today announced that Rayonier (NYSE: RYN) has selected and deployed Riverbed's Steelhead® appliances. The deployment, which took place at 11 locations worldwide, allowed Rayonier to consolidate its IT infrastructure while increasing the performance of core applications.

Rayonier is a leading international forest products company with three core businesses: timber, real estate and performance fibers. The company owns, leases or manages nearly 2.6 million acres of timber and land in the U.S. and New Zealand, with approximately 40 percent of its sales coming from outside the U.S. to customers in more than 40 countries. With more than 2,000 employees and offices on five continents, Rayonier's IT workforce and infrastructure had become increasingly disparate as the company had grown. The eight dispersed data centers that had been added over time were becoming costly and were difficult to manage consistently. For these reasons, Rayonier decided to consolidate its IT infrastructure from eight data centers down to two.

A few of Rayonier's business units expressed concern that the consolidation project would result in remote employees having difficulty accessing files, including Windows® File Sharing, SQL® R7 and Lotus® Notes. To ease these concerns, Rayonier's CIO committed to deploying a new solution only if it provided equal or superior file and application access and performance, to all employees -- no matter their location. This mandate prompted Rayonier to start looking for a WDS solution that could meet its performance needs while at the same time being sensitive to cost.

The company reviewed several alternatives, including solutions from Blue Coat, Cisco, Packeteer and Riverbed®. Rayonier's entire networking infrastructure is built with Cisco; therefore, an obvious choice for the company would have been to deploy Cisco WAAS. According to Adam Rasner, director of corporate networking at Rayonier, the evaluation team conducted further research on Riverbed and Cisco and even held a "bake-off." The results of the bake-off, coupled with customer references and a review of Gartner's 'WAN Optimization Controller Magic Quadrant'(i), heavily influenced the final selection.

"Riverbed won the bake-off in several areas -- better response time, ability to decrease the need for additional bandwidth and simpler configuration requirements. Most importantly, we were impressed by the ease of deployment," said Rasner. "If we had chosen to work with other vendors, we would have had to allot 10 to 15 percent of our budget toward professional services. Installation of the Steelhead appliances takes only minutes and can be executed by our local IT staff -- significantly reducing our outside professional services costs."

The company has deployed Riverbed Steelhead appliances at eight data centers and several operating locations since June 2007. They've since experienced a 70 to 90 percent decrease in new bandwidth demand -- and better yet, they've honored their commitment to equal or superior service for employees. "Riverbed was the best technology choice for us to complete our data consolidation project worldwide," Rasner concluded.
