RCN Metro Optical Networks Building Exclusive, Low-Latency Financial Services Network

State-of-the-Art Network Ring Provides Xtreme Low-Latency Connections Between Colocation Facilities and Financial Exchanges in New York and New Jersey Regions

HERNDON, VA--(Marketwire - September 15, 2009) - RCN Metro Optical Networks, a division of RCN Corporation (NASDAQ: RCNI) and a premier provider of fiber optic-based network solutions, announced today that it is building a low-latency network, designed exclusively for the financial services industry. The new network ring will connect colocation facilities and financial exchanges in the New York and New Jersey regions.

"Our new financial services network ring represents the industry's first, large-scale, low-latency network designed exclusively for the financial services community," said Felipe Alvarez, President, RCN Metro. "RCN Metro enjoys a long-standing reputation for excellence in addressing the unique requirements of the financial services industry, and we're excited to enhance our capabilities with this latest addition."

The high capacity, high availability network ring offers financial institutions extremely low-latency transport, supported by unique performance-level SLAs that guarantee specific latency levels. It features a state-of-the-art ROADM/DWDM-based core infrastructure, and will offer a capacity of 88 40 Gig channels on its first day of operations. In the next phase of this project, the network will be capable of offering 100 Gig channels. Additionally, unlike other commercial networks, this ring has the ability to keep traffic within New Jersey or extend out into New York, based on a customer's specific requirements for exchange connectivity.

The network ring will offer a direct connection between several of the region's leading financial exchanges and major colocation facilities. Colocation facilities on the network ring will include RCN Metro's recently launched state-of-the-art, high-density colocation facility located at 165 Halsey Street in Newark, NJ and its 111 8th Avenue facility in New York, as well as other colocation provider facilities.

The network is expected to be available later this year. The response from RCN Metro's clients has been strong and RCN Metro has already taken orders from clients. To learn more about this capability, prospective clients should call 888-955-6877.
