RE2, Inc. Awarded Phase I Army SBIR to Research Robotic Door Opening Technology

PITTSBURGH, PA--(Marketwire - June 23, 2009) - RE2, Inc., a leading developer of intelligent modular manipulation systems, announced today that it has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program to research robotic door opening technologies for the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC).

During the 6-month Phase I, RE2 will research and design a Robotic Door-opening Kit (RDK). The goal of the RDK technology is to decrease mission duration of Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) performing urban reconnaissance operations by providing these vehicles with the ability to autonomously open doors and enter rooms or buildings. The modularity and interoperability of the RDK will allow it to be integrated onto next generation robotic systems and currently fielded UGVs as an upgrade kit, providing a low-cost, autonomous door-opening solution for the existing fleet of fielded UGVs.

"The operation of opening a door using existing UGVs is often time consuming due to sensing and control limitations," stated Dr. Patrick Rowe, vice president of research and development for RE2, Inc. "Our goal is to design a robotic technology that assists the operator with the door opening task by developing a plug-n-play door opening end-effector and intelligent perception software that will enable the robot to autonomously open doors."

The RDK is a potential dual-use technology that could be utilized for a variety of military reconnaissance missions requiring entrance into and within buildings by mobile robots, and for civilian uses such as tactical law enforcement/SWAT, security, delivery, maintenance, and human assistive applications.

"This project represents the next stage of modular manipulation end-effector research for RE2 and a continued vote of confidence by the Army for RE2's intelligent manipulation expertise," stated Jorgen Pedersen, president and CEO of RE2, Inc.
