RE2, Inc. Selected for Participation in the U.S. Army Commercialization Pilot Program to Productize Its Small Robot Toolkit

PITTSBURGH, PA--(Marketwire - November 18, 2008) - RE2, Inc., a leading developer of intelligent modular manipulation systems, announced today that it was selected to participate in the U.S. Army Commercialization Pilot Program (CPP) to accelerate the commercialization of the Small Robot Toolkit (SRT) developed under a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The U.S. Army established the SBIR Commercialization Pilot Program (CPP) in response to the 2006 National Defense Authorization Act to increase Army SBIR technology transition and commercialization success. The CPP provides highly focused funding and direct support from experienced business professionals to help accelerate the fielding of capabilities to Soldiers. The program also benefits the nation through stimulated technological innovation, improved manufacturing capability, and increased competition, productivity, and economic growth.

"RE2 was one of twenty-five companies selected out of a field of more than four hundred Phase II SBIR performers to participate in the CPP. RE2 was chosen based on the success of its SRT Phase II SBIR, its potential for sustained economic growth, and the immediate transition opportunities for modular manipulation technologies by both military and civilian explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) personnel," said Michael Maston of MILCOM Venture Partners, the firm selected by the U.S. Army to manage the CPP.

"We are honored to have been chosen by the Army to participate in this prestigious program," states Jorgen Pedersen, president and CEO of RE2, Inc. "The CPP Award will enable RE2 to ensure that the SRT technology is rugged, reliable, and affordable prior to transitioning to the users of current and next-generation robotic platforms."

RE2 plans to use the CPP resources to enhance, test, and productize the SRT modular manipulator arm and derivative technologies, including the RE2 End-Effector Retrofit Kit. The RE2 End-Effector Retrofit Kit is a field-upgrade kit that makes it possible to use plug-n-play end-effector tools on currently fielded and next-generation robots. The Retrofit Kit replaces the robot's existing gripper with a hand-tightened RE2 Quick-Release™, which can be used to mount a variety of mission-specific end-effector tools. The RE2 Quick-Release technology is a component of the SRT and was developed under the Phase II SBIR.
