Real Food Daily Celebrates Vegan Week With New Menu & Kids' Menu

LOS ANGELES, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- October 31, 2005 -- The Real Food Daily Restaurants will be celebrating Vegan Week (the first week in November) with the launch of a new menu and their first-ever children's menu. The Santa Monica location will be the first to launch these menus on Nov. 1, with West Hollywood launching on Nov.3. "We are thrilled to debut these new menus during Vegan Week, and we thought that it was the perfect time to add a kids' menu so they can celebrate too," said Ann Gentry, executive chef and owner of the Real Foods Daily Restaurants.

Highlights of the new menu include three different kinds of innovative wraps, including the Tofu Wrap with herbed tofu, grilled vegetables and sun-dried tomato pesto in a spinach tortilla; the Caesar Wrap with avocado and blackened tempeh in a spinach tortilla; and the raw Living Wrap, which is filled with sunflower sprouts, cucumbers, guacamole, lettuce, tomato and greens, rolled with a red pepper sunflower spread and served in a collard green wrap. The new menu also includes other options for raw food eaters, like the Living Lasagna, which is layered with marinated vegetables and almond cheese, topped with a pesto and tomato sauce and served with a beet salad. Another raw dish, the Living Paradise Starter, features julienne vegetables, avocado, sunflower sprouts and almond cheese, rolled in rice paper and topped with raw tomato sauce, daikon and watercress.

The children's menu, inspired by Gentry's own children, features four Basic Bowls, which include brown rice, Spanish rice, soba noodles or mashed potatoes. Children can then choose a topping of Melted Cashew Cheddar Cheese, a Savory Gravy, or Ranchero Sauce. Each bowl is served with vegetables of the day and a beverage, all for $6.50 per child. Children are given non-wax, vegan crayons so they can draw on their menus and let parents eat -- at least part of their meal -- in peace.

The naturally sweetened desserts will continue to change every two weeks, but the West Hollywood location will also be adding to the menu Soy Delicious and Rice Dream ice creams in chocolate and vanilla. Watch for seasonal pies which will be debuting for Thanksgiving, too.

Vegan Week can also be celebrated with recipes from Chef Ann Gentry's new "The Real Food Daily Cookbook" (Ten Speed Press, $24.95), which includes many of the restaurants' most popular items, such as the Yin Yang Salad with Peanut Sauce, Butternut Squash Soup and Lentil-Walnut Pate. Gentry also provides recipes for lean versions of her favorite southern dishes; Southern-Style Skillet Cornbread and Red Bean Chili with Butternut Squash and Okra. The Tuscan Bean Salad with Herb Vinaigrette and the Tofu Quiche with Leeks and Asparagus are the more sophisticated options in the book. Savory flavors of favorite Mexican dishes include the Burrito Supreme and the Mexicali Chop with Lime Cilantro Vinaigrette and Crispy Tortilla Strips. Decadent Coconut Cream Pie with Chocolate Sauce, Pecan Pie and a Double Chocolate Layer Cake are also included for dessert lovers.
