Reality Check-McGuinty Liberal Record on "Family Day"

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 3, 2007) - NDP Leader Howard Hampton says the McGuinty Liberals can't be counted on to keep their promise of a new holiday for Ontarians.

Today, in a desperate attempt to divert attention from his record of overseeing the loss of 175,000 manufacturing and resource jobs in Ontario, Dalton McGuinty is promising to establish a new statutory holiday - despite effectively killing a private member's bill that would have done just that.

McGuinty has been promising a new statutory holiday for four years - and he hasn't delivered. In 2004, McGuinty Liberals supported a resolution calling for the August long weekend to be made an official statutory holiday. Two years later, however, the McGuinty government has not made any new holidays a reality for Ontario's hard-working families.

"Dalton McGuinty found the time to give himself a $40,000 raise but didn't get around to giving working families a much-needed day off. Now he's promising it again. Ontario families won't get fooled again," Hampton said.

Ontario currently has eight statutory holidays. British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan have nine. Other countries, like France, have 11.
