REALITY CHECK: McGuinty Wrong on Post Secondary Education

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 15, 2007) - Speaking to Young Liberals at an event in Toronto, Dalton McGuinty mischaracterized his own record on post secondary education.

McGuinty: For every dollar in new tuition fees, three dollars are provided in student aid.

Reality: Not so. The Canadian Federation of Students has concluded that "The much touted $358 million in student assistance will only be phased in four years from now, in 2009-2010. Over this period of time, annual 5% tuition fee increases will claw back $472 million, or in other words for every dollar allocated by the government to student aid more than $1.30 will be clawed back through tuition fee increases." (Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario. "McGuinty's Faulty Framework: Real Picture of Ontario's Tuition Fee Framework" 2005)

McGuinty: Says he's creating a new $300 grant to help students.

Reality: Too bad tuition fees for the average undergrad have increased $460 in the last two years - and are scheduled to increase by that much again over the next two years.
