Rear-Admiral Denis Rouleau is Announced as Next Vice Chief of the Defence Staff for the Canadian Forces

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 15, 2008) - Today, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), General Rick Hillier, announced that Rear-Admiral Denis Rouleau will be the new Vice Chief of Defence Staff (VCDS) and will be promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral. He will replace Lieutenant-General Walt Natynczyk, who will become the new CDS in the coming weeks.

"Rear-Admiral Rouleau is a strong leader and an officer of great integrity and experience," stated Minister MacKay. "I support General Hillier's choice wholeheartedly and take this opportunity to wish RAdm Rouleau the best of luck in his new functions."

"Rear-Admiral Rouleau's experience in operations and more recently as Chief of Programme at National Defence Headquarters, makes him the right person to assume the role of VCDS and to help shape the future and priorities of Canada's military," said General Rick Hillier.

The VCDS plays a critical leadership role in coordinating and directing the activity necessary to ensure departmental policy and strategic objectives are achieved. The VCDS reports to both the CDS and the Deputy Minister.

Rear-Admiral Rouleau graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and Management. Rear-Admiral Rouleau's accomplishments span several decades, including being Executive Officer of HMCS SKEENA, Commander of HMCS ATHABASKAN, and Commander of the Fifth Maritime Operational Group and Deputy Fleet Commander in Halifax and Commander of the Multi-National Standing NATO Maritime Group 1. His most recent appointment was as Chief of Programme at NDHQ, in Ottawa.

The change of command ceremony is expected to take place on June 24, 2008.
