Recent SolarWinds Market Survey Offers Insight Into the Growing Complexity of IT Environments Managed by Network and System Administration Professionals

35% of Respondents Responsible for 10 or More Locations, With Virtual Server Workloads Monitored by 67%, and Hypervisor Support Now Part of the Workload for More Than 45%

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwire - September 28, 2010) -  SolarWinds® (NYSE: SWI), a leading provider of powerful and affordable IT management software to more than 95,000 customers worldwide, today released the results of a survey of IT infrastructure management professionals that shows the changing roles of these key personnel.

The survey of nearly 700 IT professionals included feedback from network and systems administrators, network and systems engineers, IT directors and managers, as well as CIOs and CTOs. SolarWinds conducted the survey during Summer 2010, and surveyed IT professionals who do not use its products.*

Among the key findings:

  • 35% said their teams are responsible for monitoring and managing systems across 10 or more sites. 
  • Nearly 30% of survey takers are managing more 100 servers (physical or virtual).
  • Nearly a third of the servers being monitored by participants are virtual machines. Amongst the respondents, VMware is still the clear leader with 78% deploying VMware infrastructure. But, Hyper-V (28%) and Xen (11%) are making gains.
  • Most respondents -- 85% -- are running Windows servers, followed by Linux (12%) and Unix (8%).

The responsibilities of these professionals now span a wider range of technologies than in the past. Survey takers indicated their teams are now on the job keeping the following systems up and running:

  • Company network (83%)
  • Physical servers (81%)
  • Applications (70%)
  • Storage (68%)
  • Virtual servers (67%)
  • Virtual Infrastructure/Hypervisors (45%)

"Less than five years ago, your typical network administration team was called on to troubleshoot bandwidth issues, or figure out why end-users couldn't connect with the Internet," said Josh Stephens, SolarWinds' Head Geek and VP of Technology. "Today, these teams have to tackle a much broader range of technologies distributed over a much wider range of geographic locations. In particular, this survey shows the increasing importance of having network management teams that are fluent in application management, storage management and virtualization and vice versa. We've seen this trend in our own users -- those traditional departmental silos have to break down so that IT organizations can tackle the management challenges that these new technologies will introduce."

* The SolarWinds-sponsored survey was conducted May 24 - June 10, 2010, via an online survey service. The survey was sent to more than 14,000 IT professionals, resulting in 699 completed surveys.
