Blood samples were taken from each of the test participants in order to determine how the timing of exercise affected fat-burning and energy expenditure. The conclusion of the experiment as determined by the laboratory tests show that it might be an advantage to exercise before breakfast. The metabolism of fat and carbohydrates was greatest when physical activity was done in a fasted state.
Dr. Jason Gill says that, "Any exercise you do is beneficial but the indications are that there might be an extra benefit associated with exercising before eating, compared to after. However, further study is needed to determine whether the present findings extend over the long term." As exercising before breakfast and after breakfast both showed an increased metabolism of fat throughout the day compared to the control group, it would appear that just doing physical activity is more important than worrying about when to exercise.
