Recombinant Data Launches tranSMART Professional Open Source Services

Program Accelerates tranSMART Implementation; Provides Training and Support, Investment Protection

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - Apr 24, 2012) - Recombinant Data, a healthcare data warehousing and clinical intelligence solutions provider, launched tranSMART Professional Open Source Services today at Bio-IT World Conference & Expo '12 in Boston. tranSMART is an open source knowledge management platform used by medical and life science researchers to advance translational science and clinical research through information sharing and collaboration. Recombinant Data co-developed tranSMART with a major pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare products company which recently made it available as open source software.

The promise of data exchange with international medical and biopharmaceutical research projects adopting tranSMART, such as the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) European Translational Information & Knowledge Management Services (eTRIKS) program within the European Union, has created demand for commercially supported deployments in the United States. Recombinant Data has contracts with eight of the top 12 pharmaceutical companies1 to configure, deploy and manage pilot or production tranSMART instances. The broad base of academic medical centers where Recombinant supports the i2b2 informatics framework may also benefit by extending existing research infrastructure with tranSMART Professional Open Source Services.

Recombinant Professional Open Source Services for tranSMART include:

  • Performance Tuning and System Audit
  • Installation and Testing of Application Updates and Patches
  • Technical Support with Guaranteed Response Times
  • End User Training and Educational Materials
  • Dedicated Client Services Coordinator
  • Utilization Reporting

"Recombinant Data's tranSMART Professional Open Source Services combine the benefits of open source software applications with the quality, reliability, and consistency of commercial services," said David Hardison, PhD, managing director, Health Sciences at Recombinant Data. "Global biopharma companies and academic medical centers are maximizing the value of tranSMART by engaging Recombinant Data for professional implementation, network management, support, and maintenance." tranSMART Professional Open Source Services clients also mitigate risk and liability with software warranty and indemnification and have access to the Recombinant Data Curation Center of Excellence.

tranSMART Earns Accolades and Acceptance
tranSMART was a Grand Prize winner of a 2010 Bio-IT World Best Practices Award and a CIO 100 Award for its innovation and potential to advance translational research. tranSMART enables scientists to develop and refine research hypotheses by investigating correlations between genetic and phenotypic data, and assessing their analytical results in the context of published research and other resources.

Key components of tranSMART include:

  • A Data Mart and Repository for managing phenotype and genotype information that combines a data mart of clinical trial results, observational medical data, and 'omics content with access to federated sources of open and commercial databases.
  • A Dataset Explorer that provides flexible, powerful search and analysis capabilities that integrate and extend the open source i2b2 application, Lucene text indexing, bioconductor, Galaxy, and GenePattern analytical tools.
  • Role-based, enterprise-scale security model that allows an organization to control data access and use in accordance with internal policies governing the use of research data and controlled sharing with collaborators.

"The tranSMART biomedical knowledge management platform has a model that scales across groups to facilitate productive public/private partnerships. We are working with the tranSMART Project to take it to the next level to achieve the full potential of the vision," said Brian Athey, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics, Associate Director, Michigan Institute for Clinical Health Research, University of Michigan Medical School.

tranSMART Community Meeting at Bio-IT World '12
Researchers from major academic medical centers, pharmaceutical manufacturers and biotechnology companies have formed a tranSMART community to support further development and foster adoption in the interest of successfully leveraging tranSMART to advance healthcare and life sciences research. The group will hold a working session during Bio-IT World '12 in Boston on Wednesday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m. The event will be hosted by Recombinant Data at the company's new headquarters in Newton, MA, 15 minutes from the conference site.
