Record Breaking Event News Footage: What Is a Greasel... And How Fast Will It Go? Almost 100-Miles per Hour!

Yahoo! Autos Sets First-Ever Land Speed Record With Grease-Powered Vehicle; Record-Attempt Is the First for a Diesel Vehicle Powered on Regular Cooking Oil

VICTORVILLE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 13, 2006 -- So, how fast can a Greasel go? Yahoo! Autos has just set the first-ever land-speed record with a grease-powered vehicle. The car achieved a top speed of almost 100 miles per hour on its second attempt. The first attempt reached almost 82 miles per hour. Yahoo! Autos set the land speed record with a 3,000 HP, 6-cylinder, twin turbo, grease-powered diesel on Sunday, November 12, 2006 at the El Mirage Dry Lake Bed near Victorville, Ca.

The Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) sanctioned record-attempt was the first for a diesel vehicle powered on regular cooking oil. The two-day SCTA event ran Saturday and Sunday and is the last land speed-racing event of the year. Yahoo! Autos set the land-speed record to celebrate the launch of the Yahoo! Autos Green Center ( -- the most comprehensive source for all things related to alternative fuels.

What is a Greasel? If you happen to be driving an SUV, truck or car that runs on diesel, there is hope out there -- and it might come from a vat of french fries. Current testing using WVO (Waste Vegetable Oil), filtered and prepared for internal combustion systems, is currently being used on diesel engines as an alternative for gas and diesel fuel. So, instead of gasoline or diesel powered vehicles, think french fry or peanut oil for fuel. Now imagine yourself stuck in traffic. What would be your choice: the smell of diesel or peanut butter and french fries?
