Red Back Announces Appointment of Lukas Lundin as Chairman of the Board

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 13, 2006) - Red Back Mining Inc. ("Red Back" or the "Company") (TSX:RBI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Lukas H. Lundin as Chairman of the Board effective immediately.

Returning from a recent visit to the Company's new gold mine in Ghana, Lukas Lundin commented, "The successful construction of Chirano in 14 months and the smooth commissioning process is attributable to a highly talented and dedicated Red Back team. I am very impressed with the operations at Chirano and with the prospects for increased production and extended mine life. Congratulations to all the staff for a job very well done and I look forward watching Chirano grow."

The Company is also pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Hugh Stuart to the position of VP Exploration. Prior to joining Red Back in October 2003 as Exploration Manager in Ghana, Mr. Stuart was previously Exploration Manager for Ashanti Goldfields at the Geita Gold Project in Tanzania. At Geita, Mr. Stuart was responsible for the discovery of the Nyankanga gold deposit and the delineation of resources of over 10Moz leading to the development of what is now East Africa's largest gold producer.

Recently, in Ghana, Mr. Stuart and the Red Back technical team discovered the Enchi Project which is now the Company's highest priority regional project.

Mr. Stuart has 17 years international experience in the mineral exploration field and holds a B.Sc (Hons) in Geology from the University of Manchester and an M.Sc in Mineral Exploration and Mining Geology from the University of Leicester.

Red Back Mining Inc. is a Canadian mining company listed on the TSX under the symbol "RBI". The Company holds a 90% interest in the Chirano gold mine located in Ghana, West Africa. Gold production commenced in October 2005 and is scheduled to produce a minimum of 123,000 ounces of gold per year over an initial 8.5 year mine life. In addition to Chirano the Company has significant landholdings in Ghana both in proximity and along strike from Chirano and regionally.
