Red Bend Software Named FOTA Market Leader by Ovum

Study Forecasts 85% of New Handsets Worldwide Will Have FOTA in 2009

WALTHAM, MA--(Marketwire - November 28, 2007) - Red Bend Software, the market leader in Mobile Software Management and Firmware Over-the-Air (FOTA) updating solutions for mobile devices, today announced that Ovum, a leading independent market research firm, has named Red Bend the FOTA market share leader, powering 49% of all new FOTA-enabled mobile phones.

The independent Ovum study, "Support for Device Management in Mobile Handsets: 2007-2009," assesses the global market adoption of firmware over-the-air (FOTA) and device management (DM) capabilities in mobile phones as of second quarter 2007. The study finds that these technologies are rapidly being adopted by manufacturers and service providers globally, and forecasts that by the end of 2009, 85% of new handsets will include FOTA software. Ovum's assessment is based on primary data representing nearly 800 handsets launched worldwide during the last four years. Red Bend has arranged for the study to be available for download at

"The Ovum study validates our market leadership position as the preferred provider of client-side solutions for mobile software management," said Yoram Salinger, CEO of Red Bend Software. "In just one quarter our market share increased by nearly 50%, from 33% share in Q1 to 49% in Q2. We continue to meet or exceed our quarterly forecasts, and plan to close 2007 with our software on 250 million mobile phones."

Ovum reports Q2 market share of FOTA client software as follows:
   -- Red Bend Software - 49%
-- HP (previously Bitfone, acquired by HP in February 2007) - 33%
   -- InnoPath - 15%
   -- Other - 3%

"Growing support for advanced mobile device management technologies in mobile handsets promises to give the mobile service provider a much increased degree of control over the device fleet," said Jessica Figueras, Practice Leader of Service Infrastructure at Ovum. "We are also seeing the relationship between Open Mobile Alliance Device Management (OMA DM) standards and FOTA tightening. Shipment numbers for the two technologies are converging as OEMs increasingly replace proprietary transports for FOTA with standards-based OMA DM protocols. In 1Q07 the ratio of OMA DM to FOTA shipments was 50%, but this grew to 74% in 2Q07, so the gap is closing quickly."

Red Bend's vCurrent® Mobile enables manufacturers and operators to update firmware over-the-air. vCurrent Mobile version 5, released in July, is the first FOTA solution to update firmware while a consumer is using the phone, without taking the device offline. Red Bend's FOTA solution is available in 117 handset models from leading manufacturers including LG, Motorola, Sharp, Sony-Ericsson, Toshiba and others. Red Bend's vCurrent Mobile and device management client are interoperable with standards-based device management servers.

FOTA updating enables a management authority, such as a mobile service provider, to remotely update files stored in the firmware of a mobile device over the wireless network. Newer technology, such as Red Bend's vRapid Mobile™ solution released earlier this year, enables the management of individual firmware components by dividing the firmware image into modular blocks associated with particular applications, which can then be updated separately.
