Red Cross Encourages Canadians to Donate Before Matching Program End Date

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 11, 2008) - Red Cross is encouraging all Canadians wishing to support relief efforts in Myanmar to act now and double the impact of their donation. Thanks to the Government of Canada's generous donor matching program, all private donations to the Canadian Red Cross Myanmar Cyclone appeal received by noon on June 13 will be matched.

The matching program also includes gifts made in support of the China Earthquake appeal. Donations must be received by noon on June 23 to be eligible for the match.

"The response of Canadians to these disasters has been generous and swift," says Charlie Musoka, emergencies program manager with the Canadian Red Cross. "We hope that the Government of Canada's matching program will encourage more Canadians to support much needed relief efforts under way in affected communities."

The Red Cross response to both emergencies was immediate. Since the disasters struck the Canadian Red Cross has mobilized aid workers and deployed much needed relief supplies in support of the emergency response activities.

The Red Cross is appealing to the public to please give generously to help those affected by these recent disasters. Funds raised will be used to provide survivors with basic supplies, emergency shelter, and to ensure people have access to health care and clean water. More detailed assessments are being carried out to determine the longer-term needs of vulnerable communities.

Canadians wishing to help people affected by the earthquake are encouraged to contribute by donating online, at one of the nine financial institutions, calling 1-800-418-1111 or contacting their local Red Cross office. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked "Myanmar Cyclone" or "China Earthquake" and mailed to the Canadian Red Cross National Office, 170 Metcalfe Street, Suite 300, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 2P2.

The Canadian Red Cross is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which includes the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross and 186 national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
