Red Cross Reminds Canadians to Donate Before China Match Deadline

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 21, 2008) - Red Cross is encouraging all Canadians wishing to support the earthquake relief efforts in China to act now and double the impact of their donation. Thanks to the Government of Canada's generous donor matching program, all private donations to the Canadian Red Cross China Earthquake appeal received by noon on June 23 will be matched.

"Millions of earthquake survivors are still in urgent need of shelter, water and medical treatment," says Yunhong Zhang, Asia program manager with the Canadian Red Cross. "Thanks to the Government of Canada's generous matching program Canadians will have the opportunity to double the impact of their donation."

The Red Cross response to this disaster was immediate. More than 35,000 local Red Cross volunteers continue to provide first aid and relief supplies to those in need. The Canadian Red Cross has deployed aid worker Zhang to assist relief efforts in the region. In addition, the Canadian Red Cross has delivered 1,000 urgently-needed tents with an additional 6,250 on the way, to help provide shelter for those left homeless by the earthquake.

The Red Cross is appealing to the public to please give generously to help those affected by the earthquake in China. Funds raised will be used to provide survivors with basic supplies, emergency shelter, and to ensure people have access to health care and clean water. Once immediate needs have been met families will need help rebuilding their homes, communities and lives.

Canadians wishing to help people affected by the earthquake are encouraged to contribute by donating online at, in person at banks across Canada, calling 1-800-418-1111 or contacting their local Red Cross office. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked "China Earthquake" and mailed to the Canadian Red Cross National Office, 170 Metcalfe Street, Suite 300, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 2P2.
