Red Sox Fans Cautiously Optimistic as Red Sox Home Game Ticket Prices Down Seven Percent Compared to Last Year

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT--(Marketwired - Apr 1, 2016) - The Boston Red Sox average home game ticket prices on the secondary market decreased compared to the same period last year after another disappointing season, according to TicketNetwork.* This time last year, Red Sox average home game ticket prices were at $127. The average home game ticket prices are currently at $118, a 7% decrease. The Red Sox won a World Series title in 2013 but have since failed to reach the postseason.

The Red Sox missed the playoffs two years ago but there was a lot of buzz in Bean Town heading into the 2015 season. Boston fans were enthusiastic about the acquisition of Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval. It appeared the Red Sox were poised for another championship but a couple months into the season the Red Sox found themselves at the bottom of the division. Red Sox fans are concerned about a repeat of last year and this is playing a factor in the home game ticket price decrease seen in 2016. They have the talent to bring prominence back to baseball in Boston including the likes of Xander Bogaerts, Mookie Betts, and Eduardo Rodriguez but these players have yet to crossover as star attractions.

The current average home game ticket price of $118 is still well above the league average ($78) and $9 higher than divisional rival, New York Yankees (21% decrease YoY). Both the Red Sox and Yankees average home game ticket prices are down but the AL East still commands the highest average home game ticket price of any division at $92 even though that price is 11% lower than last years. The Red Sox home opener against the Baltimore Orioles is the fifth most expensive single-game MLB ticket of the year at $257.

Despite the signing of 5x All-Star pitcher David Price along with Mike Hazen to replace Ben Cherington as General Manager, it seems Red Sox fans are waiting to see how the season pans out before they invest in the club. Still, Red Sox fans have a lot to be optimistic about. The last time the Bo Sox finished at the AL cellar, they went on to win the World Series the following season. Red Sox home game ticket prices will more than likely increase throughout the season if any of their young talent take off and the team gets off to a good start.
